Taking the Leap with Premium AI Tools as a Software Developer

After exploring the capabilities of free AI chatbots, I’ve decided to take the next step: subscribing to premium AI tools. This marks a significant milestone in my journey as a software developer to deepen my understanding of AI and leverage its potential.

A Brief Recap of My AI Explorations

So far, my AI journey has included

  • Prompt and context engineering: Experimenting with optimizing chatbot responses
  • Exploring AI capabilities: Gaining insights into the diverse applications of AI
  • Brainstorming software use cases: Identifying how AI can enhance software development workflows
  • Launching a software project: Developing an application to produce a commercially viable short story using Python, OpenAI, and, eventually, React
  • Diving into local LLM stacks: Beginning a series on implementing local large language models (LLMs) to assist with proprietary code development

The AI Landscape: So Many Choices

The abundance of accessible AI tools today is remarkable. However, I’ve hit a plateau in my AI journey. To truly advance, I need to invest in premium AI services that offer enhanced features, speed, and flexibility.

Instead of juggling multiple subscriptions, I’ve opted for a more efficient approach: subscribing to services that provide access to a collection of AI models under a single plan.

Evaluating My Options

Here are the tools I’ve considered as my first premium subscription:

1. AIBox.AI

Pricing: $19.99/month.

What I Like: AIBox.AI caught my attention through the Practical AI podcast. It offers access to a range of AI models, all under one roof.

Challenges: While promising, the chatbot outputs each response one character at a time—a painfully slow experience that disrupts workflow.

2. Poe by Quora

My Choice: I opted for the $19.99/month plan, which provides 10 million points. Poe also offers a dedicated app for faster access, and I’ve already downloaded the Windows desktop version.

What I Like: Poe offers access to multiple AI models, including GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Claude, and others, using a flexible point-based system. It’s easy to use and well-suited for developers.

3. Other Options

AIBox.AI compiled the following summary of additional services:
